On July 5th, which marks the 13th anniversary of the 2009 Urumchi Massacre, the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) commemorates the victims of the violent Chinese government crackdown against peaceful protesters. From July 5-7 2009, thousands of Uyghurs who were peacefully protesting against unfair treatment and discrimination were killed, disappeared or injured by Chinese police forces.

Letter to the G7 leaders on combating Uyghur forced labour

We, members and supporters of the Coalition to End Forced Labour in the Uyghur Region, are writing to you in advance of the G7 annual Leaders’ Summit on 26-28 June to urge the adoption of concrete measures to combat forced labour and other grave human rights violations against Uyghurs and other Turkic and Muslim majority peoples of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (Uyghur Region), perpetrated by the government of China.

Uyghur Forced Labour Prevention Act Comes Into Force
On June 22nd, the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) came into effect in the U.S., banning the import of goods from East Turkistan. The UFLPA establishes a ‘rebuttable presumption’ that all goods, including raw materials, coming from East Turkistan are tainted by forced labour, requiring a high standard of evidence from the importer to show that goods are not tainted with forced labour.

The World Uyghur Congress applauds the election of Uyghur-American attorney, Nury Turkel as the Chair of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). Chair Turkel was the first Uyghur American appointed to the Commission by House Leader Nancy Pelosi in May 2020, where he served as a Commissioner and was reappointed in 2022, as Vice-Chair. He is also the Chairman of the Board for the Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP), a senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Civil Society Calls for Urgent Measures to Protect Uyghurs at Risk of Refoulement

No return is safe for Uyghurs!

On World Refugee Day 2022, a group of 22 refugee and human rights groups and 50 Uyghur organizations are calling on governments and international organizations to take urgent steps to protect Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples at imminent risk of refoulement. As atrocity crimes unfold in the Uyghur region of China—including mass detention, forced labour, and torture—Uyghurs outside China, including human rights defenders, are subject to persistent barriers to international protection and risks of deportation.
