European Parliament Conference: “Forbidden to Move, Forbidden to Pray: The Plight of the Uyghurs in China”

UNPO  The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), in collaboration with the World Uyghur Congress (WUC), will convene a conference at the European Parliament entitled “Forbidden to Move, Forbidden to Pray: The Plight of the Uyghurs in China”.Hosted by Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP (ALDE) the event will aim to draw attention to the intensification of the oppression of the Uyghurs of East Turkestan, specifically looking at the systematic denial of their right to freedom of movement and belief. The event will take place on 29 March 2017, from 9:00-12:00, and will be streamed live from UNPO’s Facebook Page (@UNPOIntl).

EP Human Rights Subcommittee (DROI) Discusses Situation in East Turkestan

UNPO  On 22 March 2017, the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) held a hearing to discuss the human rights situation in the Uyghur region of East Turkestan – known in China as Xinjiang. The hearing was attended by Members of European Parliament (MEPs), human rights experts, prominent academics, sinologists and representatives of UNPO and of its member, the World Uyghur Congress.

Sakharov Prize 2016: Nominees revealed

European Parliament Journalist Can Dündar and fellow defenders of freedom of thought and expression in Turkey, the Crimean Tatar leader Mustafa Dzemilev, the Yazidi survivors and public advocates Nadia Murad Basee and Lamiya Aji Bashar as well as Uyghur scholar Ilham Tohti are this year’s nominees for the Sakharov Prize. The Parliament awards the Sakharov Prize every year to honour exceptional individuals and organisations defending human rights and fundamental freedoms. The laureate is selected in late October.
