The WUC expresses its condolences to family and friends following the passing of long-time Tibetan activist, Ngawang Choephel, this week in Geneva. Choephel was a pivotal figure for the Tibetan community and worked for years in conjunction with the Uyghur community in Europe and elsewhere.

Choephel was born in Tibet, but escaped to India through Nepal as a young child in 1959. His work on the Tibetan issue at the UN is perhaps what he was best known for. In addition, Choephel worked closely with the World Uyghur Congress through his work with the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization, which he stood as President for a number of years.

The WUC sincerely thanks him for his contributions to the Uyghur cause and for his friendship with members of the community for so many years. It is in our memory of figures like Choephel that ensures cooperation between those seeking a more just world.
