WUC Calls On Xi Jinping to End Genocide Policies Against Uyghurs
Ahead of the 20th Chinese Communist Party (CCP) congress, which has started on October 16th and will last until October 22nd, the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) has urged Xi Jinping, who is set to secure a precedent-breaking third term as CCP General Secretary, to urgently end his genocide policies against the Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples.

“A decade ago, when Xi Jinping started his first term as General Secretary of the CCP,  nobody could foresee the suffering he would inflict on the Uyghur people”, said WUC President, Dolkun Isa. “In these ten years under his leadership, the Chinese government has orchestrated and implemented a policy of repression against the Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples in East Turkistan that are now internationally recognised as crimes against humanity and genocide.”

World Uyghur Congress Delegation Visits Norway
From October 17-19, a WUC delegation led by President Dolkun Isa visited Oslo, Norway, to participate in various advocacy and awareness-raising activities. On October 17th, Mr. Isa and 4 camp survivors participated in a hearing in the Norwegian Parliament, which was jointly organised by the WUC, the Norwegian Uyghur Committee, the Uyghur Transitional Justice Database, as well as the Green, Liberal, Chrisitan Democratic, and Socialist Left Parties. After the hearing, the WUC joined a demonstration in front of the Norwegian Parliament, where Mr. Isa, camp survivors and members of the parliament called upon the Norwegian government to do more in response to the Uyghur genocide.

On October 18th, Mr. Isa participated in a breakfast seminar organised by the Norwegian Uyghur Committee, Amnesty International Norway and Rafto Foundation to discuss the Chinese government crimes against Uyghurs. Other speakers included Sir Geoffrey Nice QC, Cecilie Hellest, Kristoffer Ronneberg and camp survivor Qelbinur Sidik.

UK Government Sued Over Forced-Labor Imports from East Turkistan
On October 25th, the WUC and the Global Legal Action Network (GLAN) are taking the UK government to court for failing to block products made with forced labour in East Turkistan from entering the UK. This legal action is one of several ongoing legal efforts, including a letter by WUC and GLAN to the Irish Revenue Commissioners calling for a ban on the importation of cotton goods from East Turkistan.

“For too long, the UK government has allowed the products of Uyghur forced labour to enter British markets,” said WUC UK Director Rahima Mahmut, speaking to Radio Free Asia (RFA). “It is shameful that cotton picked using the modern slavery of my people, within a context of atrocity and genocide, continues to flood this country’s supply chains.

Open Letter to US CBP on Trade Data Transparency
On October 20th, the WUC joined 39 civil society organisations and advocates in an open letter to the Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, to express collective outrage at a recent proposal driven by industry groups to shield ocean freight manifests from public disclosure. If adopted, the proposal would eviscerate the already limited access to customs data that is currently available to civil society. Public disclosure of vessel manifest data is essential to civil society, investigative journalists, and workers’ rights organisations, especially for supporting effective enforcement of the U.S. Tariff Act and the Uyghur Forced Labour Prevention Act (UFLPA). If this is finally done, it would hobble the agency’s ability to enforce forced labour laws, as well as the ability of civil society to share evidence of forced labour in U.S. supply chains.
