China: Fighting Terrorism or Repressing Religion?

NTD, 10 May 2013

Last month, violence in Maralbeshi, in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwestern China, left 21 dead. Chinese authorities blamed the deaths on “terrorists,” but a BBC reporter who managed to sneak into the region threw the official account into question

Now a new report from the Uyghur Human Rights Project details the Chinese Communist Party’s continued religious and cultural repression of the Uyghurs, a Turkic Muslim minority who live in Xinjiang. Alim Seytoff, the Director of the Uyghur Human Rights Project and President of the Uyghur American Association, joins China Focus to talk about the situation in Xinjiang.
