China delays visit of top military officer

Daily Yomiuri Online, 21 May 2012

BEIJING (Jiji Press)–Guo Boxiong, the top uniformed officer of the People’s Liberation Army of China, has decided to put off his visit to Japan, which had been expected to start next Thursday, according to informed sources.

The postponement of the visit by Guo, vice chairman of China’s Central Military Commission, came after the World Uyghur Congress held a general meeting in Tokyo recently.

The Chinese government was angered by Japan’s decision to allow the WUC, which Beijing considers an anti-China separatist group, to hold the meeting in the country.

This is the second postponement of Guo’s visit to Japan. He was originally scheduled to visit the country in mid-April, but the plan was put off following North Korea’s launch of a long-range ballistic missile on April 13.
