China ambassador warns Japan against stirring up “emotional” conflict

The Mainichi, 22 June 2012

Chinese Ambassador Cheng Yonghua has warned Japan against sparking an “emotional” conflict between the two countries, apparently in reference to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s plan to purchase the Senkaku Islands.

During a meeting organized by the Asian Affairs Research Council in Tokyo on June 21, Cheng expressed concerns that recent “disturbing noise” and “negative situations” had created an unfavorable atmosphere for and could even overshadow events to commemorate the 40th anniversary of normal Japan-China diplomatic ties.

Cheng was apparently alluding to Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara’s plan for the metropolitan government to purchase the Senkaku Islands, controlled by Japan and claimed by China. The ambassador said that some people are deliberately trying to stir up a conflict of public emotion in both countries. Describing the “issue” as something that would not be resolved anytime soon, Cheng said it should not be entwined with public sentiment, and stressed the importance of taking the time to resolve it through discussion.

He also expressed dissatisfaction with Japan for allowing a general assembly of the World Uyghur Congress to be held in Tokyo in May, saying that it is necessary for Japan and China to take one another’s vital concerns and interests into consideration.

Regarding North Korea, Cheng said the administration led by Kim Jong Un has been stable following a relatively smooth transfer of power from his father and predecessor Kim Jong Il.

The Asian Affairs Research Council is chaired by Takakazu Kuriyama, former Japanese ambassador to the United States.
