photo-2-straightThe World Uyghur Congress along with the International Campaign for Tibet and the Tibetan Community in Switzerland and Liechtenstein held a successful  demonstration march in Geneva, Switzerland, last Friday, September 16th. The group was made up of around 2000 people who marched from Palais Wilson to the Broken Chair Monument across from the Palais des Nations to highlight ongoing human rights violations against the Uyghurs and the Tibetans in China.

press_release_imageThe World Uyghur Congress (WUC), in light of recent evidence, unreservedly condemns the inexcusable actions by Uyghurs who have travelled to Syria to fight alongside the so-called Islamic State (ISIL). A recent report by New America has regrettably shown that at least 114 Uyghurs were registered with the group between 2013 and 2014. The WUC is saddened by these developments and openly discourages and condemns violence in any form both on clear moral grounds as well as its capacity to undermine the cause of the majority of peaceful Uyghur activists and all Uyghurs living in East Turkestan today.

The World Uyghur Congress is deeply concerned about open discrimination against the Uyghur population ahead of the G20 Summit in Hangzhou, China after a printed notice surfaced online offering cash rewards for reporting the presence of Uyghurs to police. Any government that sanctions this type of behaviour from its officials should not be fit to chair and host a meeting representing some of the world’s most powerful states whose decisions shape global economic development.
