The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) is shocked by the news of the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe during his political campaign speech in Nara. It extends its sincere condolences to family and friends following his confirmed death, today.

‘’I am utterly shocked by the news of his death. I met Shinzo Abe in the Japanese Parliament in May 2008. He always inspired great values, and he was a fervent supporter of the Uyghur cause, before and during his time as Prime Minister of Japan’’, said WUC President Dolkun Isa.

Shinzo Abe was a genuine ally of the Uyghur people, by listening to their voices and defending the cause in international fora. He has met with previous and current leaders of the World Uyghur Congress, including the current President, Dolkun Isa and Executive-Chairman, Omer Kanat. When he was in the Parliament, he helped create the Uyghur Friendship Group in the Japanese parliament, which is one of the largest parliamentary groups of the Uyghurs in the world today. He was a true believer in democracy and human rights and always promoted these universal values. During his leadership, he made important reforms in Japan and has strengthened democratic values and contributed to the peace and stability of the world.

The Uyghur community in Japan and elsewhere is grateful for his valuable contributions to advancing the Uyghur cause in Japan and internationally.

The WUC will continue to remember the great work that he has accomplished and the principles he has defended throughout his political career. He will be remembered as an ally to the Uyghur community worldwide.
