UNPO, 6 December 2013

UNPO — The office of Mr. Niccolò Rinaldi MEP (ALDE) and the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) will be convening a conference in the European Parliament to discuss the current minority human rights situation in East Turkestan and how it relates to the recent incident in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.

Since Xi Jingping took over as the head of China’s Communist Party, the question whether new leadership would bring political reform has become increasingly relevant, particularly in the area of human rights protection. The panels will focus on how China’s new leadership may influence inter-ethnic relations, development and the security policy in Xinjiang, while also addressing possible ways forward and the EU’s role in the region; today and in the future.

To address these important regional human rights and security challenges, international experts, academics and high-ranking politicians will come together to share their insights and expertise concerning the future of Chinese-Uyghur relations. Opening remarks will be delivered by Mr. Niccolò Rinaldi, MEP, Mr. Marino Busdachin, General Secretary of UNPO and Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, World Uyghur Congress President, followed by a short Uyghur poetry reading.
