Uygurs seek independent probe into Xinjiang riots

NHK, 28 August 2014

An organization of ethnic Uygurs living abroad is demanding an independent international investigation into last month’s riots in China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Rioters attacked government and police facilities in Yarkand County, Kashgar Prefecture, on July 28th.

A Chinese government news website reported that 37 people were killed in the attacks, which it blamed on terrorists linked to the pro-independence East Turkestan Islamic Movement.

The head of the World Uyghur Congress, Rebiya Kadeer, released a statement in Washington on Wednesday.

She said that many people were reportedly killed when Chinese authorities cracked down on Uygurs after the attacks.

But she said it’s impossible to know the truth because Chinese authorities have cut off Internet access and imposed tight restrictions on the media.

Kadeer also said that Chinese authorities are using drones to collect information on terrorism suspects.
