Minister Kenney Meets with Rebiya Kadeer of the World Uyghur Congress

Uyghur Canadian Society, 8 March 2014

1

Friends,

This week I was pleased to have the opportunity to meet again with my friend Rebiya Kadeer, President of World Uyghur Congress, champion of the rights of this oppressed Muslim minority community. As you may know, Rebiya was imprisoned in China for advocating for respect for the basic rights of the Uyghur people. Upon her release to the United States, she courageously took up the leadership of the World Uyghur Congress, and two of her sons were subsequently arrested and imprisoned.

We discussed the many challenges facing Uyghurs in China, and the importance of pursuing peaceful solutions in defence of the human rights of Uyghur people in Xinjiang. We also discussed the ongoing plight of Canadian citizen Hussein Ceilil, who has been imprisoned since 2006 without consular access, in violation of China’s international obligations.

Mrs. Kadeer subsequently testified before the Parliamentary Sub-Committee on Human Rights.

Feel free to share this with your friends and family.

Sincerely,

Hon. Jason Kenney, PC, MP
