Conference Announcement – The Rights of Uyghur Refugees: Past and Present Challenges

The World Uyghur Congress, along with the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization and the Society for Threatened Peoples, and with financial support from the National Endowment for Democracy, will hold an international conference focusing on the plight of Uyghurs fleeing East Turkestan, that will take place from April 25-26 in Berlin, Germany, at the Holiday Inn Berlin City East (Landsberger Allee 203, 13055 Berlin).

The two-day conference will provide a forum to bring together academics, experts, activists, members of civil society and witnesses together to discuss the problem and its underlying sources, as well as to develop a concrete strategy in terms of the remedial approach that must be taken. The conference will also provide a forum for conversation between members of WUC leadership from around the world and other interested parties.

The WUC will be expecting around 120 elected Uyghur delegates from 20 countries to attend the event, as well as other activists, interested members of civil society and political figures, who are to be invited to the Opening Ceremony, which will be open to the public.

Munich, Germany  On the 26th anniversary of the Baren Uprising, Uyghur organizations in Turkey, Germany, and in a number of other European countries met to commemorate the events and to speak about current challenges to human rights for the Uyghur community. The meetings allowed for productive dialogue about the situation in East Turkestan and for representatives and members of the community to come together to remember those that were killed during one of the most brutal uses of force against civilians to date.

The World Uyghur Congress marks March 17, 2016, as the 11th anniversary of the WUC’s current president’s release from prison and relocation to the United States. Rebiya Kadeer remained in prison in China for five and a half years of an initial eight year sentence – and remains the only Uyghur prisoner released as a result of pressure from the international community. Ms. Kadeer’s efforts continue to propel the Uyghur Democracy Movement forward and inspires those that fight for justice and democracy in and out of China.
