Uyghur-Chinese International NGO Online Conference

Last Sunday, the World Uyghur Congress co-hosted the Uyghur-Chinese international NGO online conference, bringing together prominent Uyghur and Chinese human rights activists to discuss the ongoing human rights atrocities in China. MP Nusrat Ghani from the UK and MEP Engin Eroglu have both shared remarks at the conference.

Prominent Uyghur Author Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison
On April 23, Radio Free Asia reported that Chinese authorities have sentenced Ahtam Omer, a prominent Uyghur author, to 20 years in prison. Over the past years, his work has been targeted in a book-burning campaign that saw many Uyghur literary works destroyed.

Taiwan Parliament Group for Uyghurs
Taiwanese MPs launched the “Taiwan Parliament Groups for Uyghur”, which will promote human rights for Uyghurs and cooperate with similar groups worldwide. The new established group has currently 30 Members. The World Uyghur Congress expressed its most profound gratitude for this important initiative. 

US Urged G7 Countries to act on Uyghur Forced Labour
In advance of the G7 meeting in June, US President Joe Biden urged the G7 countries to increase pressure on China over its use of Uyghur forced labour. “We’ve made our views clear that our consumers deserve to know when that the goods they’re importing are made with forced labour,” said Daleep Singh, deputy national security advisor to Joe Biden and deputy director of the National Economic Council, “Our values need to be infused in our trading relationships.”

WUC President Co-Authors OP-ED  on China’s Surveillance
On April 27, WUC President, Dolkun Isa, and the President of the Initiatives for China, Yang Jianli, wrote in Newsweek on China’s complex web of surveillance systems to monitor its citizens and critics, at home as well as abroad. “The free world must work together to find effective solutions to defeat China’s digital dictatorship and stop it before it’s exported to the world.” they urged to the international community. 

German-Chinese Government Consultation
The World Uyghur Congress called in a press release on the German Government and Chancellor Angela Merkel to make China’s genocide against the Uyghurs one of the main priorities of the German-Chinese Government consultations. During a joint press conference, China’s Premier Li Keqiang urged Chancellor Merkel to focus on Trade avoiding Beijing’s poor human rights record. Chancellor Merkel did not mention the Uyghurs; instead she referred to the severe human rights violations by the Chinese government as “differences of opinion”. 

Act New Zealand Party Will File a Uyghur Genocide Motion
On April 27, NZherald reported that “Act New Zealand Party” will file a motion in the New Zealand Parliament to debate if the Chinese government is committing genocide against the Uyghurs. 

Protest against Bavarian-Chinese Spring Festival in Munich
On April 28, the World Uyghur Congress, Society for Threatened People, the East Turkistan Union in Europe and the Ilham Tohti Initiative called on the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs and the city Munich to drop their patronage of the Bavarian-Chinese Spring Festival. The Bavarian government and Munich should not support Chinese propaganda on German soil.

The WUC Launches New Branch in Paris
On April 30, the World Uyghur Congress announced its new branch in Paris, France, with the appointment of a representative, Ms. Assal Khamraeva-Aubert.The branch in Paris will allow WUC to intensify its advocacy efforts to defend the fundamental rights of the Uyghur people, both in France and internationally.

‘’France is one of the most important countries in the European Union,” said WUC President, Dolkun Isa. ‘’In the last year, public opinion in France has changed significantly on the Uyghur issue. France must play an even greater role in the international community to defend this issue.’’
