Lawyers for WUC and UHRP Submit Universal Jurisdiction Complaint to the Criminal Courts of Argentina

Lawyers acting for the World Uyghur Congress and Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP) submitted a criminal complaint in Buenos Aires under the universal jurisdiction provisions set out in the Argentinian Constitution.

“The criminal complaint has real and symbolic significance,” Dolkun Isa of WUC said. “While the heads of state may enjoy immunity from any questioning and criminal liability while in office, they can be held accountable after holding office. They can even be arrested during international travels for their crimes.”

UN Expert Concludes “Forced Labor” has Taken Place in East Turkistan

This week, the UN Special Rapporteur on Contemporary Forms of Slavery, Tomoya Obokata, concluded in its report that forced labour is taking place in East Turkistan. “Some instances may amount to enslavement as a crime against humanity”, the UN’s expert said.

“The Special Rapporteur regards it as reasonable to conclude that forced labor among Uighur, Kazakh and other ethnic minorities in sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing has been occurring in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region of China,” the report said.

The World Uyghur Congress joined 55 organizations in a letter to US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Secretary of State Blinken urging the US government to immediately impose Magnitsky sanctions on the Chinese government officials implicated by the Xinjiang Police Files.

Xi Crackdown Foils Shanghai-like COVID Unrest in East Turkistan and Tibet

According to the Japan Times, broad surveillance measures used over the years against Tibetan and Uyghur minorities are being used to enforce lockdown rules among people in East Turkistan and Tibet.

“It’s ironic but very convenient for the CCP that it first constructed Uyghur ethno-national identity as a religious extremist ‘thought virus,’ took draconian steps to eradicate it and then a real virus came along for which similar techniques were useful,” said James Millward, professor of history at Georgetown University, referring to the Chinese Communist Party.
