UN Minority Forum Side Event: ‘Native Languages in a Contemporary World: Threats and Challenges for Youth’

World Uyghur Congress, 27 November 2017

The WUC, in cooperation with the Society for Threatened Peoples, will hold a side event Friday, December 1, from 13:00-14:00 in room XXVII at the Palais des Nations, at the 10th session of the UN Minority Forum – Native Languages in a Contemporary World: Threats and Challenges for Youth. The purpose of the event is to discuss the importance of native language to a people and the contemporary threats and challenges to its continued use. Whether it be due to the intentional actions of an oppressive government or the pressures from our contemporary globalised society, many native languages have come under strain, especially with the younger generation. This event intends to address these significant challenges to native languages by giving a platform to the youth to articulate what they think about their native language, how they relate to it and what pressures and difficulties they face when learning and using their native language.
