The World Uyghur Congress once again congratulates the newly elected leadership during the 8th General Assembly in Sarajevo, on October 26th. 

The WUC is grateful for the participation of international experts, parliament members, civil society representatives and donors, including Sir Geoffrey Nice, Vice President of the Czech Senate, Jiri Oberfalzer, MP Catalin Tenita, MP Ferenc Gelencsér, MP Dogan Bekin, MP Selçuk Özdag and Ambassador Kelly Currie for their participation to our conference and General Assembly as observers. 

The WUC is also grateful to the Bosnian authorities and the Hotel Management for their cooperation and work ensuring all our delegates safety throughout the event. 

The World Uyghur Congress extends its heartfelt gratitude to the outgoing leadership, under the presidency of Mr. Dolkun Isa, Dr. Erkin Ekrem, Perhat Muhammed, Zubayra Shamseden and Omer Kanat for their efforts and work between October 2021 and October 2024.

Under the leadership of the former President, Mr. Dolkun Isa, between 2017 and 2024, the WUC achieved significant successes, including:

  • The successful completion of the independent Uyghur Tribunal
  • The recognition of the Uyghur genocide in several national parliaments, including the EU Parliament
  • Official hearings in various parliaments
  • Strengthened UN advocacy 
  • Strengthened EU advocacy
  • Strengthened US advocacy
  • Introduction of legislations addressing the Uyghur genocide
  • Strengthened grassroots movement (#Whereismyfamily, #NoBeijing2022, #EndUyghurForcedLabour, #EndUyghurGenocide, VW campaign, TNR campaign)
  • Two International Uyghur Forums (Brussels 2022 and Tokyo 2023) and two East Turkistan Summits (Munich 2018, 2022)
  • Global advocacy, including in the Global South
  • Set up of various Uyghur friendship parliamentary groups 
  • Strategic litigation efforts (Universal Jurisdiction in Argentina, WUC v National Crime Agency [2024])
  • Research project on East Turkistan’s legal status
  • Democratic reform, including a fair, democratic and transparent elections
  • Capacity building trainings to encourage more Uyghur youth and women to join the cause

The newly elected leadership is committed to continuing the work of the outgoing leadership in ending the Uyghur genocide and finding new accountability avenues.
