On Wednesday, representatives from the World Uyghur Congress, Students for a Free Tibet, International Tibet Network, China Against Death Penalty and We the HongKongers  sent an open letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The five activists had previously met with representatives from the IOC talk to about what the institution will do to stand up for human rights given the Beijing 2022 Winter Games are being hosted by one of the world’s worst human rights abusers.

The letter makes reference to the report that was presented by the IOC on the latest progress made for the implementation of the Beijing 2022 Games.

The group also highlight the recent sanctions the IOC imposed on Belarussian officials linked to the beating, torture, and arrest of individuals participating in peaceful protest; sanctions they fully commend and support.

”The IOC must hold all governments across the world to these same standards as a necessary approach to meet the IOC’s commitments to the Olympic Charter and adhere to corporate responsibility to protect human rights as elaborated in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, particularly given its Permanent Observer Status at the United Nations.”
