The WUC and UHRP draw attention to the difficult situation faced by Uyghur, Kazakh and other Turkic women in East Turkistan. Uyghur and other Turkic women face multiple forms of discrimination and are subject to horrific human rights abuses on the basis of their ethnic identity, religion, and gender.
Since 2017, the Chinese party-state has waged a genocidal campaign against Uyghurs and other Turkic people in East Turkistan. The party-state has detained millions of Uyghurs and other Turkic people in concentration camps and prisons; separated families; institutionalized children; prevented new births; and conscripted untold numbers of people into forced labour, among other atrocities. Major rights organizations, governments, and an independent tribunal have issued judgments that this campaign amounts to crimes against humanity and genocide.
Event One: Sherqiy Turkistan Ayallirining Rohi [The spirit of the women of East Turkistan]
The first event, in the Uyghur language, will focus on the brave women survivors of the largest incarceration network in the 21st century, as they share their experiences and their urgent pleas to the international community. The survivors’ detailed accounts will demonstrate how political reeducation and forced indoctrination are key to the Government’s suppression of Uyghur and Islamic identity in the name of ‘countering terrorism and extremism. Their testimonies have been vital in exposing the atrocities carried out by the Government of China against Uyghurs and other Turkic people in East Turkistan.
