The WUC is deeply saddened by the death of Nurmuhemmet Tohti, a prominent Uyghur writer, who reportedly died shortly after detention in an internment camp in East Turkistan. He was detained from November 2018 to March of this year and was said to have been deprived of medical treatment for diabetes and heart disease, which led to his death at 70 years old.

Today marks the 30thanniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, where thousands of Chinese protestors were brutally suppressed for holding demonstrations calling for democracy and for their basic human rights to be respected. Students, teachers, activists and civilians were among those killed with estimates ranging from hundreds to ten thousand merely for exercising their right to freedom of assembly and calling for democracy.

EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: World Uyghur Congress to Convene Global Conference on Uyghur Crisis in Washington D.C.

From June 6-7 2019, the World Uyghur Congress in cooperation with the Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP), Uyghur American Association (UAA) and the Central Asia Program at George Washington University will hold a two-day international conference in Washington DC, Confronting Atrocities in China: The Global Response to the Uyghur Crisis. Proceedings will begin at 10:00 with an opening ceremony on June 6th at Capitol Hill.

The conference comes at a critical time as Uyghurs are face an unprecedented attack on their identity through an extensive network of political indoctrination camps where up to two million have been arbitrarily detained since April 2017.
