Brussels, 4 April 2019 – On the occasion of the EU-China Summit on 9 April 2019 in Brussels, FIDH, the International Campaign for Tibet (ICT), the World Uyghur Congress (WUC), the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO), and Tibetan and Uyghur communities in Belgium have organized a joint demonstration to urge the EU to demand China be held accountable for its many human rights violations. The demonstration will take place from 12:00 – 13:30 at Petite Rue de la Loi at the Schuman roundabout.

At the start of China’s Universal Periodic Review of its human rights record by the UN Human Rights Council, thousands of Uyghurs will hold a large-scale march and static demonstration in Geneva, Switzerland on November 6, 2018. Protesters will meet outside Palais Wilson at 09:00, will march at 10:00 to the Broken Chair where a static demonstration will be held from 11:00-13:00 including speeches from civil society and other leaders.

On the fourth anniversary of the Yarkand massacre, the World Uyghur Congress remembers all those who were killed on, and in the days following, July 28, 2014. It has been four years since Chinese security forces violently suppressed a large peaceful protest in Yarkand, leading to the deaths of many innocent Uyghurs. Since then, we have witnessed an escalation in discriminatory state policies that have led to the an estimated one million Uyghurs arbitrarily detained in political indoctrination camps.
