By Human Rights Watch – The Chinese government should immediately free people held in unlawful “political education” centers in Xinjiang and shut them down, Human Rights Watch said today. Since about April 2017, the authorities have forcibly detained thousands of Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslim minorities at these centers, where they are subjected to propaganda promoting Chinese identity.

The World Uyghur Congress has released its newsletter covering the month of September concerning our activities as well as the most prevalent issues concerning the Uyghur community in East Turkestan and elsewhere.
The newsletter looks at a number of developing stories coming out of the region and the diaspora including the ban on the use of the Uyghur Language in the Hotan prefecture, remembering Uyghur victims of enforced disappearance, the unjust sentencing of Hong Kong’s democracy leaders, the targeting of the Kazakh ethnic group in East Turkestan by the Chinese authorites, and more.

The World Uyghur Congress issued a Press Release this week expressing its strong concern after the unjust sentencing of Hong Kong pro-democracy figures Joshua Wong, Nathan Law and Alex Chow. The result leaves no doubt that Hong Kong authorities have chosen to side with injustice and the silencing of peaceful dissent since the rise of the umbrella movement in 2014.

By Gulchehra Hoja – Authorities in northwest China’s Xinjiang region are increasingly sentencing mostly Muslim Kyrgyz to reeducation centers for “religious violations,” according to a source in Kyrgyzstan, who said members of the ethnic group now face similar restrictions to those placed on the region’s ethnic majority Uyghurs.

The World Uyghur Congress issued a press release this week after it emerged that Chinese authorities in the Hotan prefecture had decided to completely ban the Uyghur language at all education levels up to and including secondary school at the start of the fall semester in September 2017.
