A Chinese security official said Thursday that the police recently broke up a “terrorist group” that was involved in an attack in August 2008 in the western city of Kashgar that resulted in the deaths of 17 paramilitary officers. The official, Wu Heping, said the police had detained 10 members of the group, including two “ringleaders,” Abdurixit Ablet, 42, and Imin Semai’er, 33, both natives of the restive western region of Xinjiang, according to Xinhua, the state news agency. Previously, Chinese officials had said they had arrested a taxi driver and a vegetable seller at the scene of the attack and charged them with the killings.
