Dear Chancellor Merkel,

Ahead of China Prime Minister Le Keqiang’s visit to Germany, the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) would like to draw your remind you of the ongoing human rights violations happening in the People’s Republic of China against Uyghurs and to urge you and your administration to ensure that these issues remain at the forefront of your considerations when setting out your agenda in the coming days.

As you may well be aware, Uyghur religion, language, culture and identity are severely suppressed in China, along with other peoples, such as the Tibetans. Only a few weeks ago did we witness one of the most brutal crackdowns since 5 July 2009 – where possibly thousands have since disappeared – in which Uyghurs were brutally killed in Maralbeshi. Likewise, the world is watching in horror at the continuing reports of self-immolations by Tibetans in China.

Germany is a leading and resolute supporter of the promotion of the fundamental human rights around the world, and the visit of Mr Li would be an opportune moment for the German government to show this to the world by raising these issues of concern.

It is also vital to take the initiative of ensuring that business interests come second to the preservation of human rights, something which has seemingly become common in the context of the economic crisis.

It is for these reasons why we respectively urge you and your government to raise such important and egregious human rights violations that are in urgent need of redress. It is with the support of democratic countries where human rights are respected that oppressed peoples find hope to continue their struggle.

Yours sincerely,

Rebiya Kadeer

President of the World Uyghur Congress
