Unrest in Xinjiang: Diplomatic Sqaure’s interview with Ms. Rebiya Kadeer

Diplomatic Square, 10 November 2011
By Vijay Wadhwani

Xinjiang is China’s largest province that accounts for one-sixth of the country’s territory and a large muslim publication.

Evidently, discord runs high in this region as in Tibet, where allegations of severe ethnic discrimination, human rights abuses and demographic changes by flooding these provinces with Han chinese are alleged.

Xinjiang has been simmering with discontent that erupted a few months ago with over 140 people killed and large-scale arson and rioting, particularly in Urumchi and areas bordering Pakistan.

Due to the absence of free press and free speech, there are allegations and counter allegations while one has to depend largely on official versions and news that trickles out through private channels, internet, cell phone and word of mouth.

We bring here an interview of the Uyghur leader, Rebiya Kadeer, taken by our oath American representative, Vijay Wadhwani.

In another page, we carry a response received from the Embassy of China at Delhion their point of view of the Uyghur issue which is now attracting global attention.
