‘The 10 Conditions of Love’ was screened as part of the ‘Movies that Matter’ Film Festival hosted in The Hague, The Netherlands over the past week (25-31st March 2010) and was followed by a debate with Uyghur activist Rebiya Kadeer.

Rebiya Kadeer, leader of the suppressed Uyghur people, visited the Netherlands this week for a screening of a film portraying her journey and ongoing struggle for the rights of 20-million people living under ruthless oppression in East Turkestan. The festival, called ‘Movies that Matter’ was organised by Amnesty International. Ms Kadeer joined the film’s director, Jeff Daniels, in a panel debate immediately following the showing which sparked debate on the human rights violations experienced by the Uyghur people of East Turkestan. The movie caused controversy last year at the Melbourne International Film Festival and this recent showing in The Netherlands serves to draw further international attention to the plight of the ethnic Uyghur population.

During her visit, Ms Kadeer also met with politicians in a private session to build on the success of her meeting with members from the Commission of Foreign Affairs last December and recommend steps to be taken for the protection of human rights of the Uyghur people.

Ms Kadeer also addressed academics and students at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam . UNPO hosted the Uyghur delegation in their office in The Hague where staff members and representatives of other international  NGOs engaged in fruitful discussion about the situation of the Uyghurs.
