The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) together with the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) and support of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) organized their second leadership training seminar in two years.

The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) together with the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) and support of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) organized their second leadership training seminar in two years. This year it was organised in Berlin Germany from the 21st until the 24th of April 2008. The seminar proved to be a great success and was another great opportunity to empower the Uyghur diaspora, it furthermore was a great occasion to  show the world the difficult position the Uyghurs in East Turkestan are facing.

WUC – UNPO Report: Uyghur Leadership Training Seminar 2008 (Berlin, Germany)

This report is the result of the “Uyghur Leadership Training Seminar” held from 21 – 23 April 2008 in Berlin, Germany. The seminar was jointly organised by the WUC and the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), and funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).

In addition to promoting the Uyghur cause during the event itself, the core objective was to enable present and future Uyghur leaders to become themselves more effective international proponents of their rights.

Uyghur Leadership Training

 

The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) together with the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) and support of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) organized their second leadership training seminar in two years, which opened today the 21st of April 2008. Over 50 members of the Uyghur Diaspora from around the world together with prominent academics, government representatives and members of the civil society gathered in Berlin Germany to discuss this year’s topic “Self-Determination under International Law”.

Mr. Dolkun Isa, Secretary General of the World Uyghur Congress, opened the occasion, welcoming participants to the training seminar, many of whom traveled some distance to attend the event, including from Australia, Canada, Kazakhstan, Norway and the United States.

Providing Uyghur Leaders with the Means to Protect & Promote their Human Rights and Democracy

As China’s economic weight increasingly encourages the international community to accept promises of “democratisation” and “human rights protection”, and with China preparing to present itself to the world during the 2008 Olympic Games, minority communities are working to remind the world that the People’s Republic of China remains a state in which the death penalty is applied more frequently than anywhere else, in which freedom of religion, speech, and assembly are substantially curtailed, and in which ethnic and religious minorities, as exemplified by recent crack downs in Tibet and East Turkestan (also known as Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region), continue to suffer the systematic violation of social, political, and human rights.
