WUC – In light of the progressively alarming human rights situation in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), World Uyghur Congress (WUC), in cooperation with the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), and sponsored by the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Group (ALDE), is convening a two-day conference entitled “In Defense of Religious Freedom: The Uyghur Struggle for Human Rights’’. The conference will be hosted by Izaskun Bilbao Barandica MEP (ALDE) and will be held at the European Parliament in Brussels, room PHS 5B001, on the 22 October 2015 from 09:00 to 18:30 and on the 23 October 2015 from 09:00 to 12:30.

UNPO Alternative Report for CEDAW Documents Systematic Discrimination Endured by Uyghur and Tibetan Women in China

UNPO – Earlier this month, UNPO submitted its Alternative Report to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women on the occasion of its 59th Session, documenting the violations of the International Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women by the Chinese Government. The report discusses the systematic ethnic and religious discrimination endured by Uyghur and Tibetan women in particular. According to UNPO, the human rights situation of minority women in China remains of high concern on all levels: political, civic, social, economic and cultural.

Brussels — The World Uyghur Congress (WUC), in collaboration with the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), PEN Uyghur Centre and French PEN, will convene a conference entitled ‘Uyghur Mother Tongue Rights in China – Perspectives, Challenges and Policy’ in Paris on 21 February 2014 to mark the 15th Anniversary of UNESCO’s International Mother Tongue Day. Two panels of experts will discuss international standards for minority language protection and raise awareness about assimilationist and discriminatory policies endangering the Uyghur language in East Turkestan. Opening remarks will be delivered by Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, President of the World Uyghur Congress, Mr. Marino Busdachin, General Secretary of UNPO and Mr. Sylvestre Clancier, International PEN Board Member.
