Launch of ‘Friends of Uyghur’ Friendship Group in the European Parliament Brings Together MEPs, NGOs and Public to Celebrate Uyghur Community Culture

UNPO — On 19 October 2017, the newly formed Uyghur Friendship Group, in collaboration with MEPs Csaba Sógor and Ilhan Kyuchyuk, marked its inaugural event with a celebration of the Uyghur culture. The launch brought together a variety of people including representatives from NGOs, MEPs, members of the Uyghur diaspora and the wider public and drew attention to this people’s vibrant culture, while also calling for the need to protect their cultural rights.

UNPO — On 19 October 2017, the newly-formed Uyghur Friendship Group, in collaboration with MEPs Ilhan Kyuchyuk and Csaba Sógor will host an event to stimulate the sharing of ideas between MEPs, representatives of NGOs, scholars and members of the Uyghur community. This will start with a conference, immediately followed by an opening ceremony and a cultural event with the aim to internationally raise the profile of the Uyghur heritage.

The World Uyghur Congress, along with International Campaign for Tibet as well as a number of other NGOs, participated in a demonstration on June 2nd at Schuman Circle, Brussels. The demonstration brought together members of the Uyghur and Tibetan communities along with representatives from European Parliament, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the International Federation for Human Rights, among others.

World Uyghur Congress, 31 May 2017

The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) will participate in a rally in cooperation with the International Campaign for Tibet and a number of other NGOs taking place on June 2, 10:30 –12:00 at Schuman Circle, Brussels. The demonstration will bring together members of the Uyghur and Tibetan communities along with representatives from European Parliament, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the International Federation for Human Rights.

The WUC as well as a number of other NGOs and activists have already raised strong concerns about the talks and urged leaders including European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker to substantively raise the worsening human rights situation in China with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and his delegation.

A rally by a coalition of NGOs urging the EU to raise the bleak human right situation in China will take place on June 2, 10.30 am – 12 pm at Schuman circle. The rally will include representatives from the Tibetan and Uyghur communities, the European Parliament, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the International Federation for Human Rights and International Campaign for Tibet.

On the eve of an important Summit in Brussels on June 2, the European Union is being urged by European Parliamentarians and a coalition of NGOs, including the International Campaign for Tibet, to raise urgent concerns on human rights with China.

China: EU Summit Should Make Rights A Priority

European Union leaders should publicly and privately press China’s government to end its crackdown on human rights and immediately release all detained activists, Human Rights Watch said today in a joint letter with a dozen other nongovernmental organizations. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, European Council President Donald Tusk, and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini will attend the EU-China Summit in Brussels with senior Chinese officials on June 1-2, 2017.

UNPO  The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), in collaboration with the World Uyghur Congress (WUC), will convene a conference at the European Parliament entitled “Forbidden to Move, Forbidden to Pray: The Plight of the Uyghurs in China”.Hosted by Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP (ALDE) the event will aim to draw attention to the intensification of the oppression of the Uyghurs of East Turkestan, specifically looking at the systematic denial of their right to freedom of movement and belief. The event will take place on 29 March 2017, from 9:00-12:00, and will be streamed live from UNPO’s Facebook Page (@UNPOIntl).
