Uyghur Mother Tongue Rights in China – Perspectives, Challenges and Policy

Brussels — The World Uyghur Congress (WUC), in collaboration with the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), PEN Uyghur Centre and French PEN, will convene a conference entitled ‘Uyghur Mother Tongue Rights in China – Perspectives, Challenges and Policy’ in Paris on 21 February 2014 to mark the 15th Anniversary of UNESCO’s International Mother Tongue Day. Two panels of experts will discuss international standards for minority language protection and raise awareness about assimilationist and discriminatory policies endangering the Uyghur language in East Turkestan. Opening remarks will be delivered by Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, President of the World Uyghur Congress, Mr. Marino Busdachin, General Secretary of UNPO and Mr. Sylvestre Clancier, International PEN Board Member.

The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) would like to announce that it is coordinating the arrangements for worldwide protests and demonstrations to commemorate the memory of the victims of the February 1997 Ghulja Incident. The occasion will also be used to remind the international community of the ongoing purge of Uyghur human rights defenders Ilham Tohti, Abduweli Ayub and Ablikim Abdurehim, who remain detained in contravention of international law.

Alarmed by recent killings of Uyghurs in East Turkestan, the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) will be coordinating protests around the world to demonstrate outside Chinese embassies and consulates. Taking place between 10 and 13 January 2014, the WUC seeks to draw attention to the Chinese government’s systematic human rights violations, especially extrajudicial killings, against Uyghurs in East Turkestan through such demonstrations, and calls upon all those wishing to show support to attend.

Brussels – The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), in collaboration with Niccolò Rinaldi MEP and the World Uyghur Congress, convened a conference entitled ‘Is the Chinese Leadership Ready for Dialogue? Perspectives on the Uyghur Issue’ at the European Parliament, Brussels. The aim of the conference was to address important regional minority human rights and security challenges, and to create a platform for dialogue on the opportunities for ways forward. Also present to support the initiative were Csaba Sógor and Cristiana Muscardini MEP.
