From November 24-25, the World Uyghur Congress attended the 9th UN Forum on Minority Issues in order to advocate for the Uyghur population in East Turkestan. Despite not standing as a minority in the region of East Turkestan, the WUC finds the Forum useful in engaging with different stakeholders including civil society and state representatives to the UN in Geneva. The Uyghur population stood around 83 percent in 1945, but has since been seriously diluted and now stands at an estimated 46 percent today.

The World Uyghur Congress lauds the decision to award leading Uyghur intellectual, Ilham Tohti, the prestigious Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders at a ceremony in Geneva yesterday. Professor Tohti was given a life sentence back in September 2014 on fabricated charges following a two-day trial. The award is chosen by a jury of ten of the world’s human rights NGOs, providing a great deal of institutional backing to Ilham Tohti’s efforts at fostering dialogue and harmony among peoples and the government in China.

Uyghur – Tibetan Protests Against China Draws Huge Crowd in Geneva

By Ahmed Mohiuddin Siddiqui — A large-scale demonstration involving members of the Uyghur and Tibetan communities in Europe was held in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday, 16th September 2016. This was the first large-scale demonstration including a substantial Uyghur delegation since China’s Universal Periodic Review in 2013. The 5-hour march involved about 2000 people from Palais Wilson to the Broken Chair Monument across from the Palais des Nations.

Tibet Post — Over 1500 Tibetans gathered for the ‘Tibet Solidarity Rally for Freedom of Religion and Human Rights’ in Geneva, Switzerland on September 16th, 2016. Local Tibetans and supporters from Tibetan advocacy groups gathered in front of the UN Building in Geneva, which coincided with the 33rd Session of the UN Human Rights Council currently in session in order to highlight the worsening situation of human rights in Tibetan and East Turkestan under the Peoples Republic of China.

The group was made up of around 2000 people who marched from Palais Wilson to the Broken Chair Monument across from the Palais des Nations to highlight ongoing human rights violations against the Uyghurs and the Tibetans in China.
