UntitledAs Muslims around the world begin to observe the holy month of Ramadan beginning on June 18th, the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) calls on China to end its restrictions on fasting and other religious observances throughout the month. Setting aside the fact that these prohibitions are clearly in contravention of internationally recognized human rights law, they also serve only to deepen the division between Uyghurs and the rest of the Chinese community in East Turkestan and fuel further resentment of the state and its unreasonable policies.

The World Uyghur Congress Recognizes 26th Anniversary of Tiananmen Square Massacre

The World Uyghur Congress commemorates the victims of the Tiananmen Square Massacre that took place on June 3, 1989, in which thousands were killed in response to legitimate student demonstrations calling for political and economic reform. Although the Uyghur people were not directly involved with the protests, save some, clear parallels can be drawn between the treatment of civilians whose only desire is to peacefully and publically express their grievances.

In light of the release of the son of WUC president Rebiya Kadeer, Ablikim Abdiriyim, on May 31, 2015, the WUC calls on China to release all of its Uyghur political prisoners whom it has unfairly and unjustly imprisoned for exercising their right to free expression, assembly and association in the context of the conflict in East Turkestan. Not only have Uyghurs living in East Turkestan been imprisoned for speaking out, but harassment and intimidation of family members of those who now live abroad has increasingly become a more serious concern.
