The World Uyghur Congress commemorates the 21st anniversary of the Ghulja Massacre in which hundreds of peaceful Uyghur protesters were killed by Chinese state security forces in early February 1997. The date remains a watershed moment in terms of the treatment of Uyghurs in East Turkestan by the Chinese government, who would use excessive force to violently break up any form of demonstration since then.

The WUC is deeply saddened by the news of Muhammad Salih Hajim’s death this week in a Chinese ‘re-education’ camp. Muhammad Salih Hajim had reportedly been arrested 40 days ago for peacefully practicing his religion and detained in a Chinese ‘re-education’ camp. The WUC has been informed that he was subjected to torture and other forms of ill-treatment during his imprisonment, which may have contributed his death.

In light of numerous reports of the disappearance and possible detention of a prominent religious leader and academic in the Uyghur community, Muhammad Salih Hajim, the WUC calls for clarification from the Chinese government about the status and whereabouts of Mr. Hajim. Given the widespread roundup and arbitrary detention of Uyghur academics, religious leaders and prominent figures in the community, the WUC is very concerned that Mr. Hajim may have been arrested or disappeared by the Chinese police.

We, in our capacity as Members of the European Parliament, urge the government of the Republic of Bulgaria not to deport to China five Uyghur asylum seekers currently detained in the Lyumbimets Detention Centre in Bulgaria. If urgent action is not taken, there are substantial grounds for believing that there is a real risk of irreparable harm if they are forcibly returned to China, including arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance or torture on account of their Uyghur ethnicity.

The World Uyghur Congress remains gravely concerned over the detention of prominent Uyghur physician and academic, Halmurat Ghopur, who was reportedly arrested in November 2017 and taken to an unknown location on alleged “acts against the state.” Ghopur’s arrest comes at a time of particular uncertainty and anxiety over the Chinese government’s escalating campaign rounding up Uyghurs not adhering to increasingly narrow and acceptable forms of behaviour from the Communist Party.
