The World Uyghur Congress lauds the decision to award leading Uyghur intellectual, Ilham Tohti, the prestigious Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders at a ceremony in Geneva yesterday. Professor Tohti was given a life sentence back in September 2014 on fabricated charges following a two-day trial. The award is chosen by a jury of ten of the world’s human rights NGOs, providing a great deal of institutional backing to Ilham Tohti’s efforts at fostering dialogue and harmony among peoples and the government in China.

press_release_imageThe World Uyghur Congress (WUC), in light of recent evidence, unreservedly condemns the inexcusable actions by Uyghurs who have travelled to Syria to fight alongside the so-called Islamic State (ISIL). A recent report by New America has regrettably shown that at least 114 Uyghurs were registered with the group between 2013 and 2014. The WUC is saddened by these developments and openly discourages and condemns violence in any form both on clear moral grounds as well as its capacity to undermine the cause of the majority of peaceful Uyghur activists and all Uyghurs living in East Turkestan today.

Any government that sanctions this type of behaviour from its officials should not be fit to chair and host a meeting representing some of the world’s most powerful states whose decisions shape global economic development.
